Watercolor on tan Arabic paper; two illuminated strips of text added to top and bottom; framed in beige paper painted with red, gold, and green floral pattern; outer frame of dark blue paper with gold and orange borders; entire piece mounted onto heavy paper.

Small cartouche above portrait reads "Pīr Ghulām Balchand 956" [=1549 or 50 AD]; however this date is spurious as Akbar was a boy then. Balchand did paint portraits of Akbar in his old age ca. 1630.
