The Book of Ruth begins with the story of Naomi, the mother-in-law of Ruth, who takes her two young sons to the land of Moab. Her sons grow up and marry two Moabite women, one of whom is Ruth who returns with Naomi to Bethlehem after the death of the two sons. Naomi departing Jerusalem with her two sons is the common iconography used to mark the beginning of this book.
