This miniature once marked the beginning of the Gospel Lesson of Mark in a book of hours. Here, as in other examples of Evangelists 'portraits' in the Middle Ages, Mark is portrayed as a contemporary scribe seated at a writing desk. He is accompanied by his symbol, the lion.
