This cutting has been attributed to Giulio Clovio, or perhaps a follower who worked in a nearly identical manner. Born in Croatia in 1498, Giulio moved to Italy to become one of the most important illuminators of the sixteenth century. Giorgio Vasari, the great sixteenth-century biographer of Renaissance artists, described him as a 'Michelangelo of small works.' Perhaps it is no coincidence...
