    Initial H with the Nativity
    0 references
This initial begins the first response of the first nocturn of Matins of Christmas Day, 'Hodie nobis caelorum rex de virgine nasci dignatus ...' (On this day the king of heaven deigned to be born for us of a Virgin). This initial was illuminated by an artist working in the circle of the Italian painter Neri da Rimini, whom documents show to have been active in the early fourteenth century.
