This initial begins the Introit for the feast of St. Anne (July 26), Gaudeamus omnes in Domino ..., (Rejoice we all in the Lord). The image of St. Anne teaching the young Virgin Mary became popular in the late Middle Ages with the rise of St. Anne's cult.
